Agrocel Canteen
Near Dhordo Village, Gujarat
In the stark, white expanse of the Rann of Kachchh, near Dhordo village, a resilient and sustainable canteen provides respite for Agrocel Industries' staff. Located within the plant premises, it addresses the region's extreme climate, offering comfort and functionality. Four modular, 50-seat dining bays connect via a linear serving space, ensuring efficient flow and fostering community.
The roof, crafted from upcycled ship-breaking timber, features innovative mud roll insulation, a testament to environmental responsibility. These rolls, composed of wool, jute, clay, and timber, provide exceptional thermal performance and support local shepherds. Exterior wooden jaalis, made from scrap timber, shade the bays, promoting natural ventilation.
Collaboration with Karigar Shala Trust empowered local youth in crafting the jaalis, mud rolls, and dining furniture. The kitchen, a separate, efficient block, serves 900-1,000 meals, with a design that withstands the corrosive environment and maximizes natural light.
The canteen’s architecture contrasts the desert’s surreal landscape and the plant’s industrial nature, creating a unique space for reflection and community amidst the harsh surroundings.
